Analysis

The Fed's latest Beige Book paints a US economy that is expanding but visibly cracked: most districts are still growing on the surface, while beneath lies polarized consumption and persistent price pressure.

Polarized consumption means high earners keep spending and even trade up while lower-income households pull back under inflation, a K-shaped split that distorts the apparent health of aggregate data and makes Fed policy harder to calibrate: too hawkish hurts vulnerable consumers, too dovish fails to tame prices. For Japan and Taiwan, structural cracks in US consumption directly affect exports and exchange rates, a signal that cannot be read as mere expansion.

In this report, growth and worry are two sides of the same coin.
