The Japan-UK-Italy next-generation fighter program (GCAP) cleared a key hurdle: the trilateral body extended its contract with the design joint venture through next year-end, defusing concerns that Britain's fiscal strains would stall development.
GCAP means far more to Japan than an aircraft. It is the first time postwar Japan joins fighter development as an equal partner rather than a licensee, with Mitsubishi Heavy leading technology accumulated since the F-2. Japan even loosened its defense-equipment transfer rules to allow third-country exports of the finished jet—a watershed in postwar security policy.
Risks remain real: multinational programs are textbook cases of overruns and delays, and UK fiscal pressure won't vanish with one extension. The 2035 deployment target's schedule discipline is the true test.
