Since China's February 24 export control list targeting Japan, the upstream has tightened, prices have surged, and inventory levels have become countdown timers.
China supplies about 80% of the world's tungsten concentrate—a concentration exceeding most rare earth categories. The damage carries a delayed fuse: toolmakers hold months of inventory, so the squeeze erupts only as stocks run dry. That moment is approaching.
The 2010 rare earth embargo offers the playbook: prices spiked severalfold, then Japan spent five-plus years halving dependence through substitutes, overseas mines and recycling. The script works, but the transition costs land on the entire manufacturing chain—autos, aerospace, semiconductor die molds.
