JBIC to Co-Finance Second US Investment Project With Two American Banks

Japan Bank for International Cooperation, the country's policy finance arm, will co-finance the second project under the Japan-US investment agreement alongside two American banks. On the surface this is a bilateral funding story. What it actually touches is the supply and demand for yen — which sets your exchange cost, the real return on any Japanese equity position, and Japan's import prices.

Look at the shape of the deal. A policy institution steps in when scale or risk exceeds what commercial banks will underwrite alone, and bringing in two US banks means part of the money is raised in America rather than shipped out of Japan. Together that describes a sharing arrangement: Japan's role is to make the project bankable, not to move the entire sum. The common misreading is to treat a headline project figure as direct selling pressure on the yen. What matters is how much of it genuinely has to be converted in the market.

Policy lenders have long arranged financing for large overseas projects so private banks will share the risk.
