Catalog House Withdraws From Rakuten Market Over Drone Partnership

A merchant leaving a platform over what its operator does elsewhere is unusual in Japanese retail. Catalog House is withdrawing from Rakuten Ichiba, saying reporting on Rakuten Group's involvement in interceptor drones conflicts with its own corporate principles.

For firms doing business in Japan there is a practical lesson: channel partnerships turn on values as well as terms and fees, and companies will say so publicly. When choosing a platform or distributor, look at the wider group's activities — particularly in defence, energy or gambling, where positions attract argument.

Watch whether other merchants follow. One exit is an isolated case; several become a real cost to the platform, and that is what would change Rakuten's calculus.
