- Total inbound visitors to Japan in May 2026 were 3,559,900, down 3.6% year-on-year, the third monthly decline this year.
- Cumulative Jan–May arrivals reached 17,936,000, down 1.1% from the same period in 2025.
- Mainland China sent just 313,000 visitors in May (-60.4% YoY); the Jan–May total of 1,717,400 was down 56.2%, the single biggest drag.
- Korea and Taiwan grew against the trend, partly offsetting the China gap, but overall volume remained below 2025 peaks.
JNTO's preliminary figures released on June 17 put May 2026 inbound arrivals at 3,559,900, down 3.6% year-on-year — the third monthly decline of the year after January and April. Cumulative Jan–May arrivals of 17,936,000 were 1.1% below the same period in 2025, marking a shift from multi-year records to a mild pullback.
Almost the entire decline traces to one market. Mainland China sent only 313,000 visitors in May, down 60.4%, while the Jan–May total of 1,717,400 fell 56.2% — barely 40% of last year's pace. Against May 2025's 790,000, China lost nearly 480,000 visitors in a single year, a gap large enough to flip the headline number from growth to contraction.
For lodging and tourism investors, two readings matter. First, the headline 'decline' is a China-driven phenomenon; strip out China and the remaining markets are still growing. Second, the visitor mix is reshuffling fast — hotels, drugstores and duty-free stores that relied on Chinese group tours must now court Korean, Taiwanese, European and US independent travelers. June figures are due July 15.
