June splits into two stories. The headline is 3,148,600 arrivals, down 6.8% year on year and the second consecutive monthly decline. The composition tells a different story: China fell by 457,301 visitors while the total fell by only 229,385, meaning every other market combined added roughly 228,000 arrivals. JNTO named fifteen markets that set all-time June highs, among them Taiwan, South Korea, the United States, India, Australia, the UK, France, Italy, Spain, Russia, Vietnam, the Nordics and the Middle East.
For operators in Japanese lodging and tourism, the practical point is a change in who is arriving. China's share of monthly arrivals fell from 23.6% in June 2025 to 10.8%. Taiwan's share rose to 21.3%, and American arrivals (354,500) outnumbered Chinese arrivals in June. Pricing, menus, signage languages and marketing spend calibrated to the 2024-2025 mix no longer match the June intake.
First-half arrivals of 21,084,800 were 2.0% below last year, achieved while China shed 2.66 million visitors over six months. Other markets added 2.23 million, replacing more than four-fifths of the loss. South Korea (5,675,100, up 18.6%) and Taiwan (3,972,200, up 20.9%) together contributed about 1.58 million of that. Visitor arrivals in June were 3,148,600, a decrease of 6.8% from the same month a year earlier. Fifteen markets including Taiwan, South Korea, the United States and India recorded their highest June figures on record. Cumulative arrivals for the first half reached 21,084,800.
June is a period when inbound demand levels off in many markets. Reduced flight frequencies and typhoon-related cancellations affected some markets, while demand rose in line with public holidays and school holidays. Arrivals increased in Taiwan and South Korea in East Asia, India and Vietnam in Southeast and South Asia, and the United States and the Nordic countries in the Western markets.
The Fifth Basic Plan for Promoting a Tourism-Oriented Country, adopted in March 2026, sets government targets including traveller numbers with repeat visitors, travel spending, and overnight stays in regional areas. JNTO states it will continue analysing market trends closely and pursue strategic inbound tourism promotion toward these targets.
