Sony's semiconductor arm and TSMC will set up a joint venture in Koshi City, Kumamoto, to develop and manufacture next-generation smartphone image sensors, with mass production from 2029. Sony is investing roughly ¥465 billion and TSMC roughly ¥282 billion — about ¥747 billion in total. Sony will be the sole controlling shareholder and consolidate the venture; Sony handles core technology, product planning and design, while TSMC supplies advanced process technology and manufacturing expertise. Financing assumes Japanese government support.
The structure inverts JASM in neighbouring Kikuyo, where TSMC leads and Sony is a minority holder. Two adjacent municipalities, the same two companies, reversed roles — in effect institutionalising "designed in Japan, built on Taiwanese process technology."
Note the timing: Kumamoto was hit by an earthquake this year, and today's list carries several ministry recovery notices. Committing ¥747 billion there is a bet on the prefecture's power, water and logistics base holding up.
