APA Group Moves to Diversify with Acquisition of Competitor Hotels
- APA Group announces acquisition of competitor hotels
- Aims to diversify and strengthen its market position
- Further expansion in Japan's hotel industry
Taiwanese travelers who visit Japan know APA Hotels well: the corner-lot, station-side chain with rooms that are small and packed tight. The group that pushed its single-brand model to the limit is now dismantling that one-brand signboard itself. Toyo Keizai spells out the shift: in June 2025 APA fully acquired Ishin Hotels Group, operator of the urban "the b" brand, and in August 2026 it reopened its founding APA hotel in Kanazawa's Katamachi district, renovated and rebranded as "the b." Same group, same street, now serving different customer tiers under different brands. APA's rooms were built for solo business travelers: small and quick to turn over. But inbound demand is shifting toward families, groups and longer stays that small rooms cannot absorb. Going multi-brand is a way to keep those guests inside the group rather than ceding them to rivals; the stated mid-term target is 100,000 domestic own-brand rooms. Two takeaways for readers: when booking, stop assuming "APA equals tiny room," because prices and room types within one group are now diverging; and for those eyeing lodging investment, Japan's hotel consolidation continues, squeezing standalone operators. Watch whether the 100,000-room goal is met through acquisition or new builds, and where "the b" prices land.
