NTT Docomo Business, NTT Mobility and NTT Docomo will begin a trial in Aichi Prefecture on 11 September combining autonomous driving with on-demand dispatch, offering free robotaxi rides in central Nagoya. Japan has run plenty of autonomous trials; what stands out here is pairing the technology with dispatch.
The combination is the point. Autonomous driving addresses the shortage of drivers; on-demand dispatch addresses vehicle utilisation. Separately they are a technical problem and an operational one. Together they sketch a business model, because a driverless vehicle only pays off if dispatch efficiency is high. Japan's taxi industry has long been short of drivers.
