Read as a pricing question, the quarter is straightforward: fewer visitors, held up by higher unit spend. Non-cruise arrivals fell 2.7%, per-visitor spending rose 3.3%, and the total moved 0.2%.
Lodging carries the pressure. Per-visitor lodging spending was JPY 90,482 across an average 8.7 nights, down from 9.4. Dividing one by the other gives roughly JPY 10,400 per night, a site calculation rather than an official figure. Total lodging spending fell from JPY 963.6 billion to JPY 927.8 billion, the only category to decline. Shorter stays are structural, so recovering that revenue means either a higher nightly rate or capturing more spending during the stay.
Purchase incidence shows where to capture it. Shopping reaches 98.95% of visitors, food 92.93%, transport 89.90% and lodging 84.50%, all close to saturation, where raising price beats raising reach. Entertainment services reach only 56.57% at JPY 16,538 per buyer, the lowest on both counts. Within it, museums and aquariums reach 33.49% at JPY 5,057, theme parks 17.00% at JPY 15,890, and hot springs and spa services just 4.82% at JPY 6,367.
For retail, buyer tickets give a price ladder: watches and film cameras JPY 75,211, jewellery JPY 67,116, electronics JPY 50,679, shoes and leather goods JPY 33,824, clothing JPY 27,214, cosmetics JPY 22,766.
