Japan Travel Balance, May 2026: Surplus Falls 16.9% to 527.9 Billion Yen as Services Account Swings to DeficitA · FULL TRANSLATION

- The Ministry of Finance and Bank of Japan published the May 2026 balance of payments preliminary release on 8 July: the travel surplus was 527.9 billion yen, down 16.9% from 635.6 billion a year earlier.
- Travel credits fell 11.3% to 764.9 billion yen from 862.0 billion, while travel debits rose 4.7% to 237.0 billion from 226.4 billion, with both sides moving to compress the surplus.
- The services account posted a deficit of 10.3 billion yen against a surplus of 130.9 billion a year earlier; the shrinking travel surplus was the main driver, while intellectual property charges stayed in surplus at 717.0 billion yen.
- The current account surplus was 3.9683 trillion yen, up 19.5%. The goods balance swung to a surplus of 6.9 billion yen from a deficit of 497.1 billion, with exports up 14.7% at 9.3602 trillion yen.
- The January-May travel surplus totalled 2.6876 trillion yen, down 13.4% from 3.1032 trillion a year earlier, with every month of 2026 below its year-earlier level.
The Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Japan released May 2026 balance of payments data on 8 July. The travel surplus came in at 527.9 billion yen, 16.9% below the 635.6 billion recorded a year earlier.
The travel balance shows what tourism earns Japan in foreign currency: foreign spending in Japan is a credit, Japanese spending abroad a debit. It climbed from 270.1 billion yen in May 2019 to 635.6 billion in May 2025. May 2026 is the first year-on-year decline of this expansion.
Credits fell 11.3% to 764.9 billion yen; debits rose 4.7% to 237.0 billion. Arrivals line up at 3.55 million in May, down 3.6%, with Chinese visitors down 60% at 310,000. Arrivals fell 3.6% while receipts fell 11.3%, pointing to losses among higher-spending segments.
That pulled services under: a deficit of 10.3 billion yen against a 130.9 billion surplus a year earlier. Intellectual property charges at 717.0 billion and financial services at 93.5 billion could not offset the 107.7 billion lost on travel.
The current account stayed strong at 3.9683 trillion yen, up 19.5%, carried by primary income of 4.2756 trillion and a goods balance back in surplus. Japan's external earnings lean on investment income and exports; tourism contributes less.
For anyone selling into the inbound market, hold the January-May total: 2.6876 trillion yen, down 13.4%, all five months below year-earlier levels. A narrowing travel surplus also means yen demand is weakening.
